Animal Production
and Fisheries
Livestock production is predominantly smallholder in scale, and
integrated into individual household farm systems. Virtually no
commercial livestock projects operate in the country. Except for
some large herds of buffalo, cattle, sheep or goats, typical animal
holdings per household are from one to several heads each of one,
or all kinds including pigs and chicken. Post conflict economic
difficulties have made livestock more important as cash income source,
to the point of limited consumption by households. Also, for the
rural population cattle is equivalent to a savings account, and
an important means for preparation of the paddy fields.
Animals are generally raised through extensive
feeding, with little or no supplementation. Ruminants and horses
are allowed to graze freely on fallow cropland or grasslands. Pigs,
chickens and some ducks are likewise mostly free to forage for their
feed, and then given some extra from leftovers.
Fishing is done using very small boats, along the coast. per capita
fish consumption is very low. In order to promote this very important
source of proteins various projects have implemented fish ponds
and others are concentrating on dried fish in order to make its
transportation to the interior easier.
